Dr John Nicholls- MBBS (Hons) FRACP - Consultant Respiratory Physician
Dr John Nicholls MBBS (Hons) FRACP is a Consultant Respiratory Physician who completed
his undergraduate training at the University of NSW in 1980. He then did his postgraduate
training in internal medicine specialising in Respiratory Medicine at both Concord and
St George Hospitals in Sydney. He was awarded his fellowship from the Royal Australasian
College of Physicians in 1988.
He has extensive experience in both Respiratory and General Medicine having worked in
Canberra since 2006 and before that in Port Macquarie. In Canberra, he has worked in both
the Department of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine and the General Medicine Unit at
The Canberra Hospital. He was the Director of the Respiratory Unit at The Canberra Hospital
in 2021. He has also attended both National Capital Private Hospital and Calvary John James
Private Hospital. He continues to work in private practice.
Dr Nicholls has wide experience in Respiratory Medicine with particular interests in airways
disease (severe asthma, COPD), interstitial lung disease, lung cancer/nodules and advanced
bronchoscopy (introduced EBUS at The Canberra Hospital). He does not do Sleep Medicine.
He has been very involved in Medical training and was a Senior Lecturer at the ANU. He has
also been a Supervisor of both Basic and Advanced physician trainees and was a local
examiner for the Royal Australasian College of Physicians.
Dr Siva Subramanian, Sleep and Respiratory Physician, Interventional Pulmonology, MBBS,FRACP.
Dr Sivasubaiah (Siva) Subramanian is a caring and experienced Consultant Respiratory and Sleep Physician with a special interest in interventional pulmonology. He is committed to helping patients understand their condition, explore their treatment options and feel confident in their care.
After gaining extensive clinical experience across India, China and Singapore, Dr Subramanian completed his physician training in Canberra and advanced training in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine at Flinders Medical Centre in Adelaide. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and a Staff Specialist at Canberra Hospital.
Dr Subramanian performs bronchoscopies in both public and private hospitals. His procedural practice includes linear and radial EBUS, cryobiopsy, medical thoracoscopy and pleural procedures. He also performs nasendoscopy to assess upper-airway contributors to chronic cough, breathing difficulties and sleep-related symptoms.
His clinical interests include complex airway disease and asthma, chronic cough, interstitial lung disease, pulmonary hypertension and CTEPH, pleural disease, lung nodules and lung cancer, obstructive sleep apnoea, insomnia, advanced sleep disorders, non-invasive ventilation and respiratory failure. He is also an active member of the Canberra Region Cancer Centre Lung Cancer and Mesothelioma Multidisciplinary Team.
Dr Subramanian provides private respiratory and sleep consultations in Canberra and holds admitting rights at Calvary Bruce Private Hospital and National Capital Private Hospital.
His approach is thorough, compassionate and patient-centred, with an emphasis on clear communication, shared decision-making and close collaboration with GPs and other health professionals.
Dr Subramanian speaks fluent English, Tamil, Hindi and Malayalam. Outside medicine, he enjoys travelling and spending time with his family.
